Game Notes:  Our first varsity game …and first varsity win! Adairsville vs. Varsity

Adairsville:  30 | WFHS: 77

Game Notes:   We grabbed our first varsity home win and improved our record to 2-0 with a big 77-30 win over visiting Adairsville. We never looked back with a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter and 55 points on the board by half time. The packed stands saw Lance Baker throw four touchdowns, two of them to Ethan Shirley. Shirley also ran for two more TD’s. Three of our quarterbacks saw action and it was a great opportunity to get a lot of our guys playing time. A tremendous on line voting campaign had WSB-TV Channel 2 select this as one of their games of the week and we were treated to seeing the Wolverines in action with some great highlights from the game later that night and again on Saturday morning. Varsity @ Pickens County

WFHS:  42  | Pickens: 7

Game Notes:  With the North Georgia mountains as the backdrop, we traveled to play our third game of the season against Pickens High School. Although the Dragons took the opening kick off and drove 54 yards to put up the first score, it was close as they would come.  Ethan Shirley (2 TD’s) ran the ensuing kick-off back for a score and we went on to rack up 35 more unanswered points to defeat Pickens 42-7.  After that opening score by Pickens, we completely shut down the Dragons. Our defensive line kept the them stalled and senior David Camp led the with a fumble recovery and an interception. On the offensive side,  QB Lance Baker had plenty of support. Ben Emert (117 rushing yards), Parker Chapman, Colton Cloud and Jason Klanic all chipped in with TD’s and with an ample lead going in to the fourth quarter, Coach Hep was able to get much of the rest of the team some playing time.

Creekview vs. Varsity (Home)

Creekview:    24| WFHS:   27

Game Notes:   The Wolverines rallied to come from behind twice and hold on to secure a 27-24 win against visiting Creekview to remain unbeaten. The offensive attack was led by Lance Baker who threw for 145 yards, Andy Cameron who had 2 catches for 95 yards and workhorse, Ben Emert who carried the ball 30 times for 109 yards and 3 TD’s. The defense was anchored by key interceptions from Cody Pilcher and Rusty Juneau and a fumble recovery by Andrew Warneke that helped seal the deal for the Wolverines.

9/26/08

Varsity @ East Hall  (Away)

WFHS: 56| East Hall: 0

Game Notes:   The Wolverines increase their record to 5-0 with a 56-0 win over
host East Hall. The Vikings high speed passing offense was stymied by the strong play of the West defense that grabbed 5 interceptions and a fumble recovery. Key end zone interceptions by Trey Rood and Rusty Juneau stopped East Hall threats. The offensive attack was led by Ben Emert who ran for 90 tough yards and QB Lance Baker, who each scored twice in the opening half.  Ethan Shirley hauled in one of Baker’s passes for another score and Tyler Lott, who led all rushers with 127 yards, added 2 more TD’s with lightening dashes of 38 and 79 yards.  West Forsyth will host Gainesville next week in a clashing of unbeatens in this key sub region match-up.

10/3/08

Gainesville vs. Varsity (Home)

GAINESVILLE: 35 | WFHS: 16

Game Notes: In a match up of unbeatens, #6 ranked Gainesville put on an offensive display that led to a 35-16 win over our Wolverines. The Red Elephants were led quarterback Blake Sims who ran for three touchdowns and threw for a fourth to move Gainesville to a 6-0 start. Although trailing for most of the games, our Wolverines never let up and caused 4 Gainesville fumbles and we never put the ball on the ground the entire night. The offense was led by running back Ben Emert, who slugged his way through a tough Gainesville defense for 84 yards and two touchdowns. QB Lance Baker was harassed all night by the Red Elephants yet completed 11 of 23 through the air for 145 yards. Coach Hepler was still upbeat despite the loss. “Sometimes you can learn more from a loss than you can from a win, and definitely tonight was a learning situation, stated Hepler.  "They are a very good football team," commented Gainesville coach, Bruce Miller. "I can't believe that's a second-year program. They played toe-to-toe with us. You know, my hat goes off to Coach Hepler and his coaching staff. “The Wolverines are off this week and will host Johnson on Oct 17 for homecoming.

Johnson vs. Varsity (Home)

JOHNSON:  23| WFHS:  41

Game Notes:   Homecoming 2008: The Wolverines overcame a first half 10-6 deficit to rally with 35 second half points to topple the visiting Johnson Knights 41-23. The offense line paved the way for Ben Emert who rushed for 181 yards and 3 tds and Colton Cloud who tacked on 60 yards in the second half and scored twice. Senior QB Lance Baker added over 100 passing yards to the totals. The defense was solidified with an inception by Rusty Juneau and a fumble recovery and 67 yd return by Chris Rubessa for a TD. Although the TD was called back on a penalty, it gave the Wolverines great position and Emert pounded it in for a score.

WFHS:  16   | FLOWERY BRANCH:   42

Game Notes:

10/31/08

Varsity @ Chestatee (Away)

WFHS: 42| CHESTATEE:   41

Game Notes:   Overtime Win!  West Forsyth overcame an early first half 20-0 deficit and came back to win a 42-41 overtime thriller on Halloween night.  QB Lance Baker led the way with 5 TD’s --4 throwing and 1 rushing and scored the crucial two point conversion in overtime.  The Wolverines actually kicked the winning field goal in regulation, but a penalty took the points off the board. The 5 yard false start call pushed the Wolverines back and the subsequent kick failed. In overtime, Chestatee scored first and elected to kick the one point conversion. West Forsyth countered with a scoring pass from Baker to Jason Klanic, which set up Baker’s two point scamper. West Forsyth heads in to the season’s final game against West Hall with a 7-2, 2-2 Region 7B- AAA record.
